Do you have the right medical evidence for your disability claim?

Millions of people apply for Social Security Disability each year. Unfortunately, 60 to 70 percent of those initial disability claims are denied. Because of this denial, many applicants need to go through an appeal process to pursue benefits, which can take two years or more. This is far too long for individuals who are suffering.

For this reason, how you file your initial claim is extremely important. One mistake will have the Social Security Administration (SSA) tossing out your application.

Medical evidence is key

One of the top reasons why Social Security Disability claims are denied is due to lack of strong medical evidence. Providing sufficient evidence is extremely important. If you are filing a claim, you want to include any of the following:

  • Treatment notes
  • Examination notes
  • Bloodwork panels
  • Laboratory findings
  • Clinical findings
  • Medical history
  • Diagnoses
  • Prognosis
  • X-ray reports
  • MRI scans
  • CAT scans

Your medical records should prove that you are unable to work due to your disabling condition. If you are regularly seeing a doctor, make sure they are documenting everything. The SSA needs to see timely and accurate records from valid medical sources, which means the evidence should be no older than six months. However, you can include older records as well.

Additionally, records should be thorough. Ask that your doctor keeps detailed records from the start, not just before you file for disability. The SSA likes to see longitudinal records that spell out your medical history.

There is no such thing as too much evidence. If you are unsure about adding something, it is best to just include it.
